No trains through Doncaster on Christmas Eve, so LNER from London needs a coach. Northern winds down from 6pm that night, and nothing runs on Christmas Day.

There will be no trains from Harrogate, Knaresborough or anywhere else on Christmas Day, and very few anywhere on Boxing Day. Trains will also finish early on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The train companies have not yet published their 2026 festive timetables, and Network Rail has not yet listed its Christmas engineering work, so this page sets out what is fixed now and when the rest arrives.

Updated 5 October: Northern has confirmed its Christmas Eve finish, and Network Rail has closed all lines through Doncaster on Christmas Eve, which hits LNER journeys home from London. Both are added below.

The quick answer

  • Friday 25 December: no National Rail trains at all. Saturday 26 December: most operators run nothing, and last year Northern, which runs the Leeds to Harrogate to York line, ran no trains on Boxing Day.
  • Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December): no trains through Doncaster. LNER will run King’s Cross to Retford and York northwards, with coaches in between. Northern trains may be cancelled from 6pm, and most are withdrawn by 8pm.
  • New Year’s Eve (Thursday 31 December): services finish earlier than normal. Last trains are not yet published.
  • Monday 28 December is the substitute Boxing Day bank holiday. What runs that day is still to be confirmed.

Christmas Eve: Doncaster closed, Northern finishes early

National Rail lists engineering work closing all lines between Retford and York on Thursday 24 December. There will be no trains at Doncaster that day. For anyone coming home to Harrogate from London, this is the one that matters:

  • LNER will run trains from King’s Cross to Retford or Lincoln, and from York northwards
  • coaches will run non-stop between Newark North Gate or Doncaster and York
  • coaches will also run from Retford to Leeds, calling at Doncaster and Wakefield Westgate
  • Northern trains between Leeds and Doncaster will not run

The Leeds to Harrogate to York line itself is not listed as affected. The problem is getting to Leeds or York from the south. Allow much longer, or travel on the 23rd.

Northern’s Christmas page on National Rail says that on Christmas Eve trains “may be cancelled or terminated short of their usual destination” from 6pm, “with most services withdrawn by 20:00”. Northern runs every stopping train between Leeds, Harrogate, Knaresborough and York. LNER’s equivalent page confirms no trains on Christmas Day and has nothing else yet.

What National Rail has confirmed for 2026

National Rail’s Christmas and New Year 2026/27 travel summary sets out the national pattern:

Date What National Rail says
Thursday 24 December Trains on many routes finish earlier than normal; do not assume the normal timetable
Friday 25 December No National Rail services
Saturday 26 December Most operators run no service; a very limited service by a small number of operators, details to be confirmed
Monday 28 December Substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day; services to be confirmed
Thursday 31 December Trains on some routes finish earlier than normal
Friday 1 January 2027 Extra late-night services are London area routes only

It says each train company’s festive details will be added “from the beginning of October onwards”, and that its guide to the last trains out of London on Christmas Eve will be published in late November or early December. That guide matters if you are coming home to Harrogate on LNER’s direct service or changing at Leeds or York.

National Rail has already flagged one major closure: Birmingham New Street has engineering work from Thursday 24 to Monday 28 December, and journeys to, from or through it will be “significantly disrupted”. That matters if you are heading to the Midlands or the south-west.

What Northern did last Christmas

Northern runs every stopping train between Leeds, Harrogate, Knaresborough and York. Its travel advice for Christmas 2025, published on 18 December 2025, said:

  • On Christmas Eve, “services will end earlier than usual”.
  • There were no Northern trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.
  • From 27 December to the end of January, trains were disrupted between Leeds and York for Transpennine Route Upgrade work.

That release came out only a week before Christmas. Expect the 2026 version on a similar timetable, so book around it rather than waiting for it.

Engineering work between now and Christmas

National Rail lists engineering work about twelve weeks ahead. We checked every planned notice on 25 September 2026: nothing is yet listed on any line serving Harrogate from 20 December onwards. That will change, because Christmas is when Network Rail does its biggest jobs.

Two weekends before Christmas are already booked around York, and both are in the October half term:

  • Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, and Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November: all lines close between Poppleton and York, and between Leeds and York. National Rail’s notices for 24 to 25 October and 31 October to 1 November say rail replacement buses run between Poppleton and York, so Harrogate line trains cannot reach York those weekends.

Buses and parking

The Harrogate Bus Company, which runs the 36 to Leeds and Ripon and the town services, publishes its Christmas timetable in December. Its 2025 notice is no longer online, so we are not repeating last year’s times. We will add the 2026 times when Transdev publishes them.

North Yorkshire Council has not announced any Christmas parking offer for Harrogate, Knaresborough or Ripon for 2026. For car parks and charges now, see parking in Harrogate. If you are driving to the Knaresborough Christmas market on 5 and 6 December, the organisers run a free park and ride.

Still to be confirmed

  • Northern’s and LNER’s full 2026 Christmas timetables beyond Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
  • The last trains on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, due late November or early December.
  • What runs on Boxing Day and on the substitute bank holiday, Monday 28 December.
  • Network Rail’s Christmas engineering work on the Harrogate line and the East Coast Main Line.
  • Harrogate Bus Company’s Christmas and New Year timetable.
